Had a very good day today, about + 9 buy-ins or somewhere in the region of a $1000. I’ll admit that it was somewhat good play, some good variance, but I do believe that I maximised my edges today and there certainly weren’t many spots in which I got the money in behind. Overall, it was heavily weighted towards smart decisions.
The tasks I set before are being suitably achieved. Stamina-wise, my little radio playing trick to give myself a boost when I’m losing energy is definitely working. Also, I’m looking at my average hands played per day (in the current month) and simply looking to beat that number by a respectable margin; a few hundred hands maybe. Not too much though so the next days target isn’t too hard to achieve. That would be counterproductive, as I think it best to gradually build up to a peak.
As for my win rate, I’m looking at my betting patterns. Not necessarily the types of hands I play but how I play them. By doing this I’m finding patterns that I’m repeating that are clearly having a negative overall effect on my earnings. It’s not even remotely close in some instances. Just using a little experience to make an educated guess as to where I’m most finding it difficult and then filtering my database of hands for those circumstances, I can see whether or not I’m consistently making errors. So far, I’ve pretty much eradicated a big calling error I was making (costing me ~ 3bb every hand that I did it) and so that should boost my earnings considerably. By doing so, it has also made me clearer about the following actions I should be taking on other streets depending on the reaction I get to my new adjustments. It feels more controlled and less vulnerable. Definitely positive.
I know self analysis is always the best way to improve, but knowing where to look is invariably the obstacle that is hardest to overcome; the issue of known unknowns. That being said, I’m now feeling that sheer brute force and a thorough attention to detail will counter this. Commitment to a baby step strategy of improvement will prove itself in the end, although it may be laborious, I can clearly see that the potential upside far outweighs the downside.
On another note, I’m currently integrating my cat into a new home (along with me) that already has two established cats there. Not easy, so I’m a little tired as I feel I have to be aware of his movements all the time so as not to upset the balance of the house too quickly. That could be messy to say the least. Vets bills are not something to be made light of (£1200 sterling the last time one of mine had a serious incident in a fight!). My caution is merited I think, although it is draining on me. I’m not a quitter by any means though, and doing the right thing by my animals is the most important issue by a mile. Fingers crossed!
I’m actually excited though, as I can prepare a new office environment laden with the latest tech and comforts. I enjoy finding new, even more ergonomic solutions to my lifestyle choices and find the whole process pretty interesting. Achieving great things is as much about taking the effort out of the task as it is about putting effort into it. You can always improve on your efficiency, much like poker and gambling.
Know any tips about integrating my animals? Know of any new interesting office technology you think might help me out or entertain me? Leave me a comment…
Next Task: Now that I’ve found a suitable path to analyse my game, I’ll mostly be doing that until I’ve exhausted that avenue. After that, it may be prudent to look closer at those people I feel are the best at this, and look at them in the way I’m looking at myself. Obvious really! I suppose that this philosophy is transferable as well, no matter what the subject. It could lead to a lot more opportunities if I can devote enough time to it. It all depends on how much I want to achieve, and I’ll never put a limit on that!
